MUSING

Musing Knitted monofilament and embroidery floss on acrylic

Musing: a period of reflection or thought. the work is centered around thought fueled by anxiety. The thoughts produced by anxiety are rapid and difficult to process. There is an increasing sense of chaos from piece to piece in the trio.

There is a contrast in the work between the sections of clear monofilament and areas with color. The sections of pure monofilament symbolize normal cognitive functioning. The knit in these areas is uniform and has a very definitive structure showing the connection. While the sections with blips of color symbolize anxious thought. These sections still have clear connections, but there is a chaos to the many colors and loose threads. The small blips of color manifest as illegible text much like anxious thoughts they cannot be read. The connection to anxiety is furthered by the process of making each piece. There is a risk working with monofilament that it may slip and the knitting will fall apart.  All the processes involved are very obsessive representing the compulsive nature of anxiety. The viewer can appreciate the work from a distance or be immersed in the disorder by standing inside the piece and looking out.
